First timer questions

Great unboxing experience with a DP752 + DP722 + DP730, with a single SIP account in parallel working pretty much straight away. First thing I’ve noticed is there’s a LOT of configuration possibilities - hopefully my simple setup goals are achievable.

Just wondering the following:

  • trying to call inbound (from my mobile, to the handsets) sometimes gets busy tone, even with handsets idle and not DND. Do I need to configure port-forwarding for the DP752?

  • What’s the best way to troubleshoot issues like the one above? Syslog? Wireshark? Or is there a log page on the DP752 itself, somewhere?

  • can either/both of the handsets keep their LCD on while idle in their cradles? (or would this create a screen burn in problem?)

  • can the Intercom shortcut be added to the LSK/RSK list? I noticed there’s only a few possible shortcuts for LSK and RSK, which is unfortunate. Being on a farm, the intercom feature to call between handsets is potentially great (much better than a portable CB radio running out of battery, or a non-portable CB base station radio), so I’d love to make that more accessible instead of being a ‘hidden’ shortcut key like “left” or “right”.

thanks.

The manual has the answer with regard to your question about PTT and LSK or RSK. I am not sure how big the farm is, but DECT devices do have a limited range that is dependent on the country and that country’s allowed output power. Generally, the range is ~ 250-300 in open air, line of site conditions.

The question regarding the screen saver is also answered in the manual as well. Of course, by keeping the screen active while in the charging cradles will only lengthen the amount of time needed to fully charge the devices as some of the available power must presumably be spent keeping the screen alive rather than being dedicated to charging.

WIreshark is the better tool, but you either need to set forwarding or enable the keep alive function in the SIP settings to cause a pin hole in the firewall. The base should have a static or reserved IP and the frequency should be in the 30 second range.

depends on the modem/router, voip provider, need for forwarding etc.

depends on the problem source

you may need to ask for the feature request…

Thanks for the helpful answers. For anyone who may read this later:

Do I need to configure port-forwarding for the DP752? [for inbound calls to work]

depends on the modem/router, voip provider, need for forwarding etc.

In my case, I only needed to port forward external port 5060 (UDP) to the base station’s static IP (there’s also “Keep-Alive” somewhere, but I only needed the port-forward to get my inbound calls working). Setting a reserved IP in the DHCP server ensured it would work consistently.

What’s the best way to troubleshoot issues

depends on the problem source

There’s a built-in syslog setting on the DP752 base, which I just pointed to tftpd running on my PC (the only working download link was one of its forks).

The DP752 also has a packet capture option, but thankfully I didn’t need to dig that deep.

…handsets keep their LCD on …or would this create a screen burn in problem?

hit it in one

Handset -> Settings -> Display -> LCD Timeout (idle) -> Disabled.

DECT -> General settings -> Handset Settings -> Offhook Auto-dial. Each handset is now a single digit: faster than the buried intercom menu option + added them as entries in the phonebook. Thanks for the link - I’ll submit a feature request to add “Intercom” as an option for the LSK/RSK shortcuts.
