Feedback for multicast paging and PTT

#1

Hello Beta Tester,

We would like to solicit further feedback for the PTT/Multicast feature of WP800. We notice there wasn’t a lot of comment in this area. Please make sure the handset is upgraded to 1.0.1.5 before testing it. Below is a list of points we would like to have feedback:

  1. Ease of setup
  2. Ease of use
  3. Issues/Abnormalities encounter (if any)

Thanks

Honestly, for our use scenarios, multicast paging isn’t very useful. Our customers are generally on a hosted environment (even if that’s a device they own) because they’re small businesses at multiple sites. Multicast based paging isn’t very useful for them.

However, I’ll throw this at our tester and have them do it anyway.

Our tester spent ~20 minutes playing and wrote up this:

BUG: While the WP800 is in the base with the screen off, incoming pages are not played. If the screen is on, it works normally.

WP800 doesn’t follow GXP21XX for IP:port. On WP800, they are two separate fields. This is not consistent.

WP800 “Multicast/PTT Setting” page is confusing. There’s a “Setting” tab and a “Paging Config” and “PTT Config” tab, but selecting the different tabs doesn’t change the “Multicast paging” section at the bottom, only the “Spectralink” settings at the top. Maybe it would be better to separate these into “Multicast Paging” and “Spectralink” instead?

The whole PTT versus paging thing is very confusing and hard to set up. We have multicast paging set up with only a few minutes of work, but the PTT button was very difficult to finally get going. We finally realized that the “Default Mode” on the phone was set to “Spectralink” and once we discovered that, then we were good to go.

Also, it took us a while to figure out that we needed to hold down the PTT button to actually speak. We did find this in the user manual, so that’s fine. Our tester likes to test things without reading the manual first.

There should be an option to make the device play a tone when the page comes in so the receiver knows what’s going on. Likewise, there should be an option to play a tone in the sender’s ear so they know they’re “live.”

As a note, G722 call quality is quite good even on the WP800 speakerphone during the paging.

Update: The pages are not played if the screen is off regardless of whether it’s in the base unit or not.

We weren’t able to get a second unit for testing the PTT…

Hi,

My comments below:

BUG: While the WP800 is in the base with the screen off, incoming pages are not played. If the screen is on, it works normally.

[GS] We were able to reproduce this issue on 1.0.1.5 as well but it can only reproduce occasionally during periods of long idle. We will continue monitor this problem in the latest build.

WP800 doesn’t follow GXP21XX for IP:port. On WP800, they are two separate fields. This is not consistent.

[GS] We realize this but do you feel the UI is more intuitive when the IP and port are in two fields or better to be in one field?

WP800 “Multicast/PTT Setting” page is confusing. There’s a “Setting” tab and a “Paging Config” and “PTT Config” tab, but selecting the different tabs doesn’t change the “Multicast paging” section at the bottom, only the “Spectralink” settings at the top. Maybe it would be better to separate these into “Multicast Paging” and “Spectralink” instead?

[GS] Let me clarify. Top portion of the UI is to configure Spectralink style PTT and multicast. The bottom UI is GS’s multicast feature. There’s some difficult combining both multicast feature so it is split up this way. Do you have any more suggestions for this part?

The whole PTT versus paging thing is very confusing and hard to set up. We have multicast paging set up with only a few minutes of work, but the PTT button was very difficult to finally get going. We finally realized that the “Default Mode” on the phone was set to “Spectralink” and once we discovered that, then we were good to go.

[GS] The device can support both PTT and multicast so in order to differentiate which mode is being used for transmission we added a way to specify the default mode by single press of PTT. We are open to suggestion to improve this area.

Also, it took us a while to figure out that we needed to hold down the PTT button to actually speak. We did find this in the user manual, so that’s fine. Our tester likes to test things without reading the manual first.

[GS] If after a single press of PTT key, we display a prompt to hold down the PTT key to transmit will it be more user friendly?

There should be an option to make the device play a tone when the page comes in so the receiver knows what’s going on. Likewise, there should be an option to play a tone in the sender’s ear so they know they’re “live.”

[GS] I believe this is already supported. Both the transmitter and receiver will play a notification. Please check the volume setting on the handset maybe it is too low.

Thanks

The wp800 only allows pages if the screen is on for is. Doesnt matter how long it’s been idle, if you hit the end button to make the screen go dark, it will immediately stop answering pages.

There is no tone, even with volume all the way up.

Will need to get back to you on thought on UI issues.

@service, PTT is just a shortcut to multicast paging; something supported on many (if not all) VoIP manufacturer end points. It’s not like Nextel walkie talkies. Plus it’s one-way audio, so it may not be what you’re thinking of.

Hi,

Hmm… this is different with our observation on 1.0.1.5. However on the current latest test build we cannot reproduce this issue so we believe it has been addressed.

There is no tone, even with volume all the way up.

Are you referring to the PTT or multicast? For PTT and Spectralink style multicast there is notification tone. For the GS style multicast, we noticed there is no tone. We will request to add tone to GS multicast.

Will need to get back to you on thought on UI issues.

Please do. We also would like feedback from other members as well.

Thanks

We’ll factory reset the phone, reprogram it, and try again.

As for the tone, we’re referring to a tone being played before the receiving phone auto-answers the incoming page and another tone on the sending phone to let them know that they’re live. Our testers did a lot of “I didn’t know it was ready” type tests because they didn’t know it was ready to speak. They were expecting a confirmation tone.

#10

Yes the confirmation tone is working for Spectralink PTT and multicast but not GS multicast.

#11

Have two menu items in the left hand side. One for Spectralink and one for GS Multicast. Also, be able to specify in the GUI whether the PTT button should be used for Spectralink or for GS Multicast.

#12

It should be consistent with other devices, which means that either other devices should have firmware updated to be two fields (one for IP and one for Port) or this device should have one field only. Also, it is not consistent other places where IP:port addresses can be specified such as syslog settings, SIP proxies, STUN settings, and so forth. We took a three person vote and agreed that it should be IP:port as one field, in general, since that’s what the world is used to for most things.

#13

Yes! This way no one has to read the user manual!

Attached images show WP800 and GXP2160 configured for Multicast paging. On both GXP2160 and WP800, channel 1 is 224.0.0.1 port 5001 and channel 2 is port 224.0.0.1 port 5002

  • GXP2160 starting paging on channel 1 works and is picked up by WP800
  • GXP2160 starting paging on channel 2 does not work and is not picked up by WP800

But:

  • WP800 starting paging on channel 1 works and is picked up by GXP2160
  • WP800 starting paging on channel 2 works and is picked up by GXP2160

And, in no case does paging to the WP800 work if the screen is is not on. Paging from the WP800 to the GXP2160 works fine, even if the GXP2160 screen is off.

#15

Hi,

We’re not quite understanding your request. You mean to have Spectralink and GS multicast both under “Multicast paging?” We will evaluate adding the paging default mode option to web UI.

We’ll advise to make it one field.

We don’t see the image. For best practice, we recommend to use a higher port number e.g. 6767. We’ll see if we can reproduce the issue here.

Thanks

#16

He meant that on the main menu, simply separate out Grandstream Multicast paging from Spectralink. This means the left hand menu would be:

  • Status
  • Account
  • Phone Settings
    • General Settings
    • Call Settings
    • Ring Tone
    • Multicast Paging
    • Spectralink
  • Network Settings
  • System Settings
  • etc

#17

We appreciate that, but we are only one piece of feedback. Doesn’t anyone else have an opinion besides us?

#18

Sorry, the person entering the post got side tracked and when someone else came back to it, they just submitted it without the image. It doesn’t really matter. We tested with other ports and multicast IPs and the bottom line was that only channel 1 was ever received on the WP800.

#19

@service

We noticed that could be an issue. The good news is that GXP21xx on the latest firmware can support both Spectralink style and GS style multicast so if you have a GXP laying around you could try to test that first. If you do have a Polycom phone that can support PTT it will work with WP800’s PTT function.

So far PTT is working for me perfectly without any problems
